Hockey in the capital
Ottawa's hockey identity is tied up with the Senators, the Rideau Canal and long, snowy winters. The city mixes public servants, students, tech workers and families, plus a large francophone community on both sides of the Ottawa River. Fans range from people who remember the team's early days to newcomers who adopted the Sens when they moved here for work.
It is also a city of rec hockey. Community arenas across Ottawa and its suburbs host adult leagues most nights of the week.
The Canadian Tire Centre
Sens home games happen out in Kanata, at the Canadian Tire Centre, a long way west of downtown. That location shapes game nights more than anything else. If you live in the core or east end, getting to a game takes planning. Many fans drive or carpool, and there are transit options on game nights, but the trip home can be slow after the final whistle.
For dating, that means an arena date is a commitment. It works best a few dates in, with the route both ways sorted. Seats should come from the Senators' or the arena's own sales, or a resale site that stands behind its buyers; anyone in your messages selling them is not a real date, however friendly they seem.
A land deal signed in August 2025 for LeBreton Flats, closer to downtown, has fans talking about a future arena there. Until that happens, Kanata is home.
Where Ottawa fans watch
Sports bars and pubs across the city show Sens games, from the ByWard Market to Westboro, Glebe and the suburbs. Many fans prefer to watch close to home rather than make the trip west. For a first date, a neighbourhood pub with tables and a manageable crowd is ideal.
The Rideau Canal Skateway
In the coldest weeks of winter, the National Capital Commission opens the Rideau Canal Skateway, a 7.8 km stretch of the canal running from downtown to Dow's Lake. It usually opens sometime in January and can run into early March, though the season depends entirely on the weather. When it is open, it is available around the clock, and the canal is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Skating the canal together is a quintessential Ottawa date. Go on a clear evening, skate as far as you like and warm up afterwards. Check the NCC's ice conditions before you head out, because the Skateway can close at short notice in mild weather.
Rec leagues and community arenas
Ottawa's suburbs, from Orléans to Kanata to Barrhaven, are full of community arenas, and adult leagues run in most of them. Late weeknight games are common, as are weekend tournaments in nearby towns. If you are dating a player, learn their schedule early and plan around it.
The Battle of Ontario
Ottawa and Toronto share a province and a rivalry. Some Ottawa households are split down the middle, with Leafs or Habs loyalties that go back further than the Senators. Teasing is part of the fun. Keep it light and about the hockey. Fans here also have long-standing feelings about Montreal. Our rival fans guide has tips for keeping it friendly.
Capital date ideas, canal season or not
1. Skate the canal at dusk. On a good night with the Skateway open, start near downtown and skate toward Dow's Lake. Stop for a hot drink along the way if vendors are set up.
2. Watch a game in the ByWard Market or the Glebe. Choose a pub with tables, watch two periods, then walk somewhere quieter. On a mild evening, Bank Street or the canal path rounds it off nicely.
3. A community rink skate and a meal in your neighbourhood. Skip the trip downtown, find your local outdoor rink and follow it with dinner nearby.
Gatineau and bilingual dating
Across the river, Gatineau is part of the same region but sits in Québec. Plenty of couples live on one side and work on the other. Many Ottawa-area fans are bilingual, and dating in French is common; francophones can switch to our French-language pages.
Getting around
Ottawa's O-Train and bus network serve the core well. For anything involving Kanata, plan ahead and check game-night service. In winter, give yourself extra time and dress for waiting outside.
Winter safety
Ottawa winters are cold and snowy, and the canal and outdoor rinks depend on conditions. Never skate on ice that is not officially open. Dress in layers, protect your hands and face, and sort out how you are getting back before the evening starts. A first meeting belongs somewhere busy, with a friend who knows where you are.
Leafs or Habs jersey in Ottawa?
Ottawa is a city of transplants, especially among public servants and students. Saying which jersey is yours, and how it ended up in your closet, gives people an easy opener and a story to ask about.
Winterlude and the February calendar
February is the heart of Ottawa's winter, with the Winterlude festival bringing ice sculptures, skating and outdoor events to both sides of the river when conditions allow. A festival afternoon followed by a skate and a warm drink is about as Ottawa as a date gets. Dates and programming change each year, so check the event's own site before you plan.
Junior hockey in the region
The Ottawa area also has strong junior and university hockey. A junior game makes an affordable, lively second date with plenty of breaks for conversation, and it gives you a chance to spot future pros before anyone else. Women's professional hockey has a home in Ottawa too, and its games have a warm, family-friendly crowd that suits a relaxed outing. Schedules are on the teams' own websites.
Shift work and government calendars
Many people in Ottawa work in government, health care or tech, and some keep shift schedules. If that is you, say so in your profile, along with the evenings that usually work. It makes planning a first date much smoother, and it shows you think about other people's time, especially when a big game falls on your only open night of the week.
Life beyond hockey
Ottawa's museums, festivals and green spaces give you plenty of options when there is no game on. Mention a favourite trail, a museum you love or the market you visit every Saturday in your profile, alongside your team.
