A season of change in Calgary
The 2026-27 season is a special one for Flames fans. It is the team's farewell season at the Scotiabank Saddledome, its home since 1983. The building's saddle-shaped roof has been part of the city skyline for more than four decades, and plenty of locals are planning one last game there with family or friends. Next door, Scotia Place is set to open in fall 2027 as the team's new home.
That makes this a fun time to date a Calgary fan. There is nostalgia, excitement and a lot to talk about.
The Saddledome on game nights
The Saddledome sits on the Stampede grounds in Victoria Park, southeast of downtown. The C-Train runs close by, which makes getting there without a car straightforward. Restaurants and bars around the Beltline and 17th Avenue SW fill up before and after games.
Farewell-season seats may be popular. Put the arena on the list for once you are comfortable together, buy from the Flames' own ticketing or a resale site with real buyer guarantees, and be very wary of anyone in your messages who has "extra seats".
We will update this guide when the move to Scotia Place happens.
Where Calgary fans watch
Sports bars across the city show Flames games, and 17th Avenue SW has a special place in fan history. During the Flames' 2004 run to the Stanley Cup Final, fans filled the street, earning it the nickname "the Red Mile". For a first date on a regular game night, a neighbourhood pub with tables is a better bet than the busiest strip.
Skating and winter outdoors
Calgary's winters bring cold snaps broken by Chinook winds that can raise temperatures dramatically in a day. That makes outdoor ice a little unpredictable. Community associations run outdoor rinks in many neighbourhoods, and there are skating spots in city parks when the weather holds.
The mountains are close too. A day trip west for a skate on a frozen lake or a winter walk can be a memorable later date, as long as you check conditions and dress for alpine weather.
Rec hockey in Calgary
Calgary's adult hockey scene spans casual drop-in sessions to serious leagues, and mixed and women's teams are well established. Expect a late weeknight slot and the odd weekend tournament if your date plays, and ask about their game night early.
The Battle of Alberta
Calgary and Edmonton have one of hockey's fiercest rivalries, and it extends well beyond the rink into friendly arguments about which city is better. The Flames also have long-standing western rivalries with Vancouver and Winnipeg. If your date cheers for the Oilers, buckle up for spirited banter. Keep it playful and about the teams. Our rival fans guide has advice.
Saddledome-season date ideas
1. A pre-game dinner in the Beltline. Even if you are not going to the game, the energy in the neighbourhood on a game night is fun. Have dinner, then watch the third period somewhere nearby.
2. A skate at a community rink. Find an outdoor rink in your neighbourhood on a calm evening and follow it with a hot drink.
3. A mountain day trip, later on. Once you know each other, a winter drive west for a walk or a lake skate makes a great day out. Check road and ice conditions and tell someone your plans.
A farewell season date
If you are a long-time fan, there is something romantic about sharing one of the last games at the Saddledome with someone new. Make it a later date, plan the evening around it and enjoy the history together.
Getting around
The C-Train and buses connect much of the city, including the area around the Saddledome. Platforms near the Stampede grounds get crowded after the final horn, so some couples linger over a late snack in the Beltline before heading home. In winter, Chinooks can bring sudden thaws and refreezes, so watch for icy sidewalks.
Safety
First meetings should be in busy places, with a friend who knows your plans and your own way back arranged. For mountain trips, check weather, road and avalanche information where relevant, and carry winter gear. The safety guide has more.
An Oilers fan in Calgary
Calgary has plenty of newcomers, and Oilers, Canucks and other fans live here too. Being upfront about your team is a great conversation starter, especially around rivalry nights.
The Saddledome years
For many Calgarians, the Saddledome holds a lifetime of memories: first games with a parent, high-school graduations, concerts and playoff nights that spilled out onto the streets. It has been home to the Flames since 1983, through their 1989 Stanley Cup and many seasons since. Talking about those memories is a lovely way to get to know someone, whatever their team. Ask your date about their first game there, and share yours. You will learn where they grew up, who they went with and what matters to them.
Looking ahead to Scotia Place
The new arena next door is due to open in fall 2027. Expect a different game-night experience, new places to eat and drink nearby, and plenty of curiosity from fans who want to see it. A first game in the new building could make a memorable anniversary date for couples who meet this season. We will refresh this guide once it opens.
Dating across Alberta
Calgary and Edmonton are about three hours apart by highway, and some couples split their time between the two. If you are open to that, say so in your profile, and agree early how often you will make the trip. Rivalry nights will need careful planning, and possibly a neutral sports bar in Red Deer.
Stampede season and the off-season
When July arrives, Calgary trades jerseys for cowboy hats. The Stampede takes over the grounds around the Saddledome for ten days, and the city's social calendar fills with pancake breakfasts and parties. For hockey couples it is a natural summer counterpart to the season: busy, loud, a bit silly and very Calgary. If you match with someone in spring, a Stampede outing makes a good test of whether you enjoy each other away from the rink.
Beyond hockey
Calgary is a city of outdoor lovers. In summer, the river pathways, the mountains and the Stampede take over. A profile that shows your summer side alongside your hockey side gives people more to connect with.
